Runner-up
Arne Naevra
Norway
Sleeping through an Artic summer night can be difficult for a photographer , not just because it is never properly dark but also because the night light can be perfect for photography . It was such a night when Arne took this shot . He had been filming all day for Norwegian tv on a small cruise ship east of Barentsöya Island, in Svalbard, but despite being tired, couldn't resist staying on deck . The boat was far from the nearest pack ice or land , but just before midnight , a strange iceberg , came into view . A scan with binoculars revealed its cargo : a young polar bear .When the boat stopped , some distance away, the bear slid off the ice ans swam over to investigate, approaching the boat several times , returning intermittently to its slowly thawing life-raft . "It illustrated so clearly how climate change is affecting the Artic," says Arne. When the boat left , the crew stayed on the bridge watching as the bear and its plinth dwindled to a speck on the horizon.
